Early Life and Career Beginnings
Kenny Rogers was born on August 21, 1938, in Houston, Texas. He grew up in a poor family and began performing as a teenager, playing guitar and singing in local rockabilly and doo-wop groups. After high school, Rogers briefly attended the University of Houston but dropped out to pursue a career in music.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Rogers played bass guitar in a jazz group called The Bobby Doyle Three. He later joined a folk group called The New Christy Minstrels, with whom he recorded several albums and had his first taste of commercial success.
Solo Career and Success
In the late 1960s, Rogers left The New Christy Minstrels to pursue a solo career. He released his first solo album, "Love Lifted Me," in 1976, but it was his 1977 album, "Lucille," that really launched him into the mainstream. The album featured the hit single of the same name, which became a number-one hit on both the country and pop charts.
Over the next decade, Rogers became one of the biggest stars in country music, scoring numerous hit singles and albums, including "The Gambler," "She Believes in Me," and "Islands in the Stream," a duet with Dolly Parton. Rogers' music was characterized by his smooth, distinctive voice and his ability to blend elements of country, pop, and rock music.
Later Career and Legacy
In the 1990s and 2000s, Rogers continued to release new music and tour, although his commercial success waned somewhat. He also branched out into other areas, including acting and writing. Rogers' memoir, "Luck or Something Like It," was published in 2012.
In recognition of his contributions to music, Rogers was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2013. He continued to perform until 2017, when he announced his retirement from touring due to health issues.
Rogers passed away on March 20, 2020, at the age of 81. He was remembered as one of the most successful and influential artists in the history of country music, with more than 120 hit singles and 24 number-one hits to his name.
